The Stamford Courthouse went into lockdown at 11:10 a.m. Wednesday after officials said a suspicious letter had been found inside the building about 25 minutes earlier.
Police, fire and EMS were joined by Hazmat units and the Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit in responding to the courthouse.
Investigators could be seen going in and out of the building for hours, and police sounded the "all clear" around 3 p.m.
Scott Hill, who lives in an apartment building across the street, was one of many residents to be inconvenienced by the incident.
"I'm glad everybody was OK and there was apparently no real danger," Hill said.
