The 21st annual Connecticut Open House Day will be held this Saturday.
It's an effort from the state Department of Tourism to remind residents about the options they have without leaving the state.
"If you had to guess what two monikers Connecticut was always famous for, I'd imagine you'd say traffic and taxes - and you would be right," said Rachel Lenda, the Connecticut state director of tourism.
She explains that things like the Open House Day attempt to change that conversation, with over 200 different places around the state offering deals and
events for in-state residents.
"We're showcasing Connecticut how it should be, where we're showcasing the positive things about it," Lenda said.
Family spots, like the Fairfield Museum and History Center, will be offering free admission. Two Roads Brewing in Stratford has a pretzel and beer deal and the Westport Country Playhouse will have behind-the-scenes tours inside - and entertainment and food trucks outside.
"Get backstage, see what we have to offer for families, for students, and just get people excited about our upcoming season announcement and what's ahead for us," said Andrea Quiles, who serves as content and community associate at the Playhouse.
Saturday can also be a chance to discover somewhere new, like Factory Underground Studio in Norwalk.
"I think people don't really understand all the little nooks and crannies of all the amazing things that go on around (the state)," said Amy Holomakoff, the studio manager and production coordinator at Factory Underground.
The space works with a who's who of big-name clients, including the Call of Duty video games, Christopher Walken and even Sesame Street, which had someone in to record at the very same time as News 12.
It plans to open its doors to public tours on Saturday, showing that the very same facilities used by some of the biggest names in the entertainment business are also available to the community.
"We're hoping to just spark people's interest and creativity just to see what is available right in their backyard," said Holomakoff.
