Sales Tax Free Week started Sunday and runs through Saturday. Sales or purchases of certain items of clothing or footwear costing less than $100 per item are exempt from sales tax.

"I definitely like Tax Free Week," said Treseme Volpe from Norwalk.

"I did a little shopping yesterday at the new Target. I went in the morning. I was kind of nervous. Thought it would be really crowded, and you know couldn't find a parking place, but I did got a few things there," said Volpe.

With Connecticut sales tax being 6.35%, you'll save $6.35 for every $100 you spend on clothes and shoes. That's three Powerball tickets.

"A penny counts here and there," said Gabby Donis from Stamford.

"I'm trying to save as much as I can for myself," said Jen Torbick from Norwalk.

The National Federation of Independent Businesses says Sales Tax Free Week is a good economic driver and that it helps get feet in the doors. But the National Federation of Independent Businesses says neighboring states offer a little more.

Massachusetts has a 6.25% sales tax rate and exempts clothing items costing less than $175 from its sales tax year-round. New York has a 4% sales tax rate, which climbs to 8.8% in New York City but also exempts clothing costing less than $110.

Sales Tax Free Week also applies to online purchases as long as they are made during this designated week. Click HERE for more information.
