Infants and young children should get the COVID-19 vaccine, according to new guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

It comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention came out with its current COVID-19 vaccine recommendations.

The CDC says vaccines for children age six months to 17 years should be "based on shared clinical decision-making."

However, the academy says children ages 6 through 23 months should get a COVID-19 vaccines — unless they have known allergies to it or its ingredients.

"They are looking to us for clear and confident guidance, and that's what we have provided with these recommendations," Dr. Susan Kressly, American Academy of Pediatric President.

The group also recommends a single dose for certain children ages 2 through 18 years.
