Social Security announces 3.6% cost-of-living increase for 2027
Nearly 72 million Americans will see their Social Security benefits increase by 3.6% next year under the newly announced cost-of-living adjustment.
The Social Security Administration announced the 2027 adjustment, which applies to Old-Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance as well as Supplemental Security Income. On average, retirement benefits are projected to increase by $75 per month starting in January 2027, while increased payments for roughly 7.3 million SSI recipients will begin Dec. 31, 2026.
“Social Security will implement this cost-of-living adjustment for 76 million Americans, giving them greater financial stability,” Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said, adding that the agency is working to deliver improved service under the Trump administration.
Beneficiaries with online accounts can view their cost-of-living adjustment notices in late November, up to three weeks ahead of traditional mail delivery, provided they enroll in paperless notices by Nov. 18. Those who do not use online accounts will receive their notices by mail in December. The agency said the notices have been streamlined into a simplified, one-page format detailing exact new benefit amounts and deductions.
Annual adjustments are calculated automatically based on increases in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, as determined by the Department of Labor.
