Milford police have identified three suspects in connection with attacks made against the city's homeless population.
As News 12 reported, city officials confirmed there has been an
increase in incidents, including physical and verbal assaults, stone-throwing and even fireworks being shot off near an encampment.
Chief Keith Mello said officers have found evidence that fireworks were thrown at or near the encampment and that swastikas were painted on a tree. Mello also said it does not appear that any of the residents were physically injured
One of the suspects was identified using a license plate reader on Old Gate Lane. Officers recovered digital evidence from other sources, which led to the identity of two additional suspects.
Mello said it appears that at least five separate incidents took place at the encampment, although they may or may not all be related to the trio.
He adds that police are continuing to gather evidence, including video from local businesses. They have stepped up patrols and enhanced security in the area.
Mello said officers are working to determine if criminal charges will be filed and if hate crimes have been committed. A Hate Crimes notification has been filed with the Connecticut State Police Hate Crimes Unit.
