Your morning train commute is about to get more expensive again.

Starting July 1, Metro-North fares will increase by 5%. That means a peak round trip from here to Grand Central will rise from $39.50 to nearly $41.50, while an off-peak round trip will go from $29 to $30.45.

Last July, Connecticut Department of Transportation officials announced final approval of the proposed rail fare changes in the state. The first of two planned increases took effect last September, at 5%, and the second 5% increase begins next month.

The state said the increases were intended to help avoid service reductions and cuts to the number of trains on the schedule after last year’s state budget, adopted in June, created a funding gap for rail services.

Metro-North Railroad services in Connecticut, along with CTrail Hartford Line and Shore Line East services, will see the 5% increase.
