Heavy downpours triggered severe flooding across parts of Bridgeport Sunday, leaving streets like Maplewood Avenue on the West End submerged under waist-high water for hours.

Residents expressed deep frustration over the damage to their cars and community, pointing to the city's aging sewer system as the root cause of the infrastructure failure.

Local police deployed officers to block submerged intersections, though officials admitted the scale of the flooding quickly became overwhelming.

In response, Bridgeport city officials and the Water Pollution Control Authority stated they are continuing to invest in sewer and stormwater improvements to address these chronic infrastructure challenges.

The City of Bridgeport issued the following statement.

"We understand the frustration and concern of residents who experienced flooding today, even in areas that don’t typically flood. This was an intense storm that overwhelmed cities in all of lower Fairfield County, including here in Bridgeport. We know aging infrastructure presents challenges, which is why the City and the WPCA has - and are continuing to invest in sewer and stormwater improvements, and major flood resiliency projects. As all departments respond today, they will identify any added improvements that may be needed."
