Connecticut's extreme hot weather protocol takes effect today as dangerous temperatures settle across the state.

Gov. Ned Lamont says the protocol begins at 11 a.m. and will remain in effect through 5 p.m. Thursday.

Officials say cooling centers will be open statewide to help residents escape the heat.

Residents can find the nearest cooling center by calling 2-1-1 or visiting News12.com for a list of locations.

State officials are urging people to take precautions during the heat wave, including staying hydrated and limiting time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day.

They're also asking residents to check on vulnerable populations, including children, older adults and those with underlying health conditions.
