A Connecticut lawmaker is urging thousands of Haitian immigrants in the state to take immediate action to protect themselves from being deported.

The warning comes after the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling this week that clears the way for the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which could put thousands of Haitian and Syrian immigrants in the region in danger of being deported.

"This includes a large community of Haitians in Bridgeport, Stamford and Norwalk, in particular. The ending of the temporary protection status means that these individuals may be subject to deportation very soon. There may be other remedies available, but that will require seeking the assistance of an attorney as soon as possible," warns State Sen. Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox.

The Trump administration says the "temporary" designation has long been abused to provide open-ended amnesty for a large number of undocumented Haitian and Syrian nationals.
