A group of state attorneys general is suing the U.S. Department of the Interior over the cancellation of an offshore wind lease off New York.
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong joined six other attorneys general in filing the lawsuit.
The case centers on a deal reached in March between the department and TotalEnergies.
Under that agreement, the company canceled its offshore wind projects.
In exchange, officials say the company received hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer funds.
The deal also required TotalEnergies to invest $795 million into oil and gas projects.
It further required the company to pledge not to develop any new offshore wind projects in the United States.
Tong argues the settlement violates federal law.
