A 4-year-old girl is fighting for her life after she was struck by a police car in Bridgeport on Wednesday night, according to officials.
Police say the officer behind the wheel was on the way to the scene of an alleged mob attack at Went Field Park when they hit the child. It happened just after 9:30 p.m. on Hanover Street, just steps from the 4-year-old's home.
Paramedics rushed the girl to Bridgeport Hospital, where she is listed in critical but stable condition as of Thursday evening, officials say.
The Bridgeport Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team and the Southern Fairfield County Traffic Unit are investigating the crash.
According to police, Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter visited the girl at the hospital.
"I am praying for the child's full recovery," said Porter. "The department's thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. There will be a fully transparent, independent investigation."
The officer's identity - and if they will face disciplinary action - was not immediately known.
