A Bridgeport man who is accused of firing multiple rounds at police officers before barricading himself in a basement, has surrendered following a standoff early Tuesday.
Officers were dispatched around 12:10 a.m. to the 600 block of Grand Street for a report of an active street fight involving a person armed with a knife, police said.
Authorities said officers encountered the man, who then fled on foot.
During the confrontation, the man allegedly fired at officers.
At least one officer returned fire, according to police.
The man then barricaded himself in the basement of a nearby home.
Police called in a hostage negotiator and eventually took him into custody.
No officers or civilians were injured.
Police identified him as 53-year-old Roberto Martins.
Martins is being held on a $2 million bond.
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The area of Grand and Catherine streets remained closed following the incident.
