Southern Connecticut State University is grieving after the sudden passing of head swimming and diving coach Tim Quill.

Quill spent 28 years leading the men’s and women’s programs, a period university leaders describe as one of the most successful eras in SCSU and Northeast‑10 Conference history. They say his loss leaves a deep void for student‑athletes, alumni and the New Haven community.

During his tenure, Quill guided SCSU to 34 NE10 Conference Championships, with 17 titles for the men and 17 for the women, along with hundreds of individual champions. He was named NE10 Coach of the Year a record 28 times.

He also coached with the SoNoCo Swim Club, working with athletes who reached the U.S. Olympic Trials and the Pan American Games.

University officials say Quill shaped champions both in and out of the pool, praising his steadiness, commitment and care for student‑athletes. They say his legacy reflects mentorship, service and heart.

Quill was a 1989 graduate and four‑time All‑American at Alfred University. He is survived by his wife, Brenda, and their children, Lilianna and Timothy V, who both attend Southern.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later. University leaders are asking the community to keep his family, student‑athletes and colleagues in their thoughts.
