The Sacred Heart Women's Ice Hockey team is celebrating as one of their own competes in the Olympics.
Amie Varano plays on Italy's Women's Ice Hockey team.
The Pioneers held a watch party Wednesday after practice to cheer Varano on as she and her teammates played against Germany.
During her time at Sacred Heart, Varano served as team captain.
Following her graduation in 2017, Varano has played professional hockey internationally, including in Switzerland, Italy and Sweden. She is currently is on the Malmö Redhawks.
Coach Tom O'Malley describes Varano has a good and smart person who is competitive.
"On the ice, she competed hard and she greatly helped our program and improve every year. I couldn't be prouder of her. It's great to see her play on world stage against other countries and have success with it. So you know, I'm really really happy for her," he says.
Italy lost to Germany 2-1. Italy will play the United States Friday.
