State Republican lawmakers are calling for a hearing with the FIFA World Cup Host Committee. They want to know more about taxpayer costs, financial risks and planning tied to the upcoming matches at MetLife Stadium.
In a letter sent Thursday to both the state Senate and Assembly budget chairs, Republicans are asking for clarity on the following items:
  • Financial obligations New Jersey agreed to accept
  • What will taxpayers have to cover and how much
  • Will New Jersey be on the hook if revenue falls short
  • Are there any guarantees or protections for taxpayers if costs go over
“Conducting these hearings now will allow the Legislature to fully understand the scope of the state’s commitments and, if necessary, take appropriate action before costs escalate further,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter.
