Residents of a Bridgeport neighborhood prone to flooding for decades may finally be getting some solutions. Fairfield County was rocked by multiple flooding events over the summer, but homeowners on Savoy Street had been sounding the alarm for years about the serious problem plaguing their neighborhood.
"This flooding situation in the north end has been going on for a number of years," Councilwoman Michelle Lyons says. "We need it addressed immediately!"
Homeowner Dale Foti has helped spearhead the effort for answers.
Her biggest concern hasn't been so much about damage caused by the flooding, rather, she says the constant floodwaters pose a serious public safety threat almost every time it rains.
"It might be a long road, but at least it's a beginning," Foti says. "There's no way to get my parents out if they need medical attention, and that - of course - is the scariest thing of all." City officials have maintained that fixing the problem won't be easy because it involves multiple towns and cities and several waterways. Ox Brook, for example, runs through several homeowners properties in the North End of Bridgeport. "You have Bridgeport, and Trumbull and Fairfield that are all part of the same grant application, and that has been approved, it's just a matter of the money becoming available," State Sen. Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox says. "It only becomes available once it's on the bond agenda."
It could take years and several millions of dollars before residents see change. "If we get the attention of the governor," Foti says. "It's a start... just start somewhere."
