Stephanie Santiana and her husband Matias Fondevila lost both their home and
two of their four dogs in a fire on Feb. 7, just a month and a half before the due date of their first child.
Santiana says anyone who knows her knows how important her dogs are to her, and teared up telling News 12 how it was a pair of 15-year-old littermates that were unable to escape.
She tells News 12 that her and Fondevila were at a family member's house for dinner that night, when a neighbor called to say their house was on fire.
"I just couldn't believe it," Santiana remembered. "Like how? Like why? You never think of anything that's going to happen like this."
Fondevila ran back to the house, but told Santiana to stay behind since she is pregnant.
The fire department has not released any information about what caused the flames. However, firefighters on the scene told Matias they believe the destructive blaze started in the basement.
"We just had a baby shower," Santiana said. "It doesn't even seem true to not have my home there."
Since that night, they have been staying with Matias' sister.
But as their son's due date gets closer, they have been working with insurance to find somewhere that will be able to handle everyone.
"It's hard to even think about," Santiana admitted. "We're just trying to keep strong, and here for each other, and making sure the baby's OK, and he just needs to hold in there a little bit longer."
In the week since the fire, Santiana says the family has found a silver lining in how much the community has stepped up.
A
GoFundMe has raised more than $26,000 as of Monday night, while bags of donations have also been showing up almost every day.
"It's been amazing and has at least given us some tears of joy. I could never imagine that so many people are out there willing, and thinking of us," said Santiana.
The family hopes to eventually repair the house and move back in, saying they look forward to the day when this is just a story they can tell their son, who they plan to name Tiago Andres.
Family members also plan to continue sharing updates on
Instagram.
