The Fairfield Warde High School wrestling team was recognized Thursday for winning the CIAC Class LL state championship for the second consecutive season.
State Sen. Tony Hwang honored the team and Coach Jason Shaughnessy with a state proclamation and congratulated them on their accomplishments.
Hwang highlighted how the team has excelled on the mat and in the classroom.
He also praised the teamwork culture Shaughnessy has created.
"Wrestling may be based on a one-to-one competition but the bond between these teammates pushing each other, holding each other accountable and showing up every single day those are the definitions of championship teams," says Hwang.
The Mustangs also won the FCIAC Championship for the third consecutive year and were named CT team of the year by the CHSCA.
Earlier this year, Shaughnessy had his 500th win.
