The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that nearly one in four pedestrians or cyclists were killed in crashes in 2023 by drivers who fled the scene after an accident.
A total of 40% of hit-and-run drivers in deadly crashes don't have a valid license, according to the company.
More than half of drivers do not have cars registered in their name.
The study also suggests that drivers are less likely to flee when they are going to be caught.
The potential use of traffic cameras and “Yellow Alert” systems that notify and seek information from the public after serious or fatal hit-and-run crashes may be beneficial for the future of catching hit and run drivers.
