New data has found that since the launch of the suicide and crisis lifeline 988, there has been an 18% decrease in suicide rates.

Findings from Connecticut and nine other states are included in that data.

The 988 line was created in 2022.

The United Way of Connecticut says that since the creation of the 988 hotline, the volume of crisis calls in the state has increased nearly 350%. From Jan. 1 to April 30 of this year, 988 CT has responded to 3,353 chats and texts, with 21% from people under 18.

United Way says that in November 2025, they launched a local response to 988 calls and texts. Since then, any calls or texts placed in Connecticut are answered by staff in the state within five seconds. United Way's president says more than 95% of callers say their state of crisis diminishes during their call.
