A Danbury man won $2 million on a scratch-off lottery ticket he bought at the Sunoco located at 300 White St.
The lottery says it was the "$2,000,000 Mega Multiplier" - a game listing 1:900,000 odds to win the top prize, but 1:2,700,000 odds to win it the way his card was set up, with specific multiplier bonuses.
The store sees a large number of regular lotto players, and according to the CT Lottery, the winner was one of them.
While many of the people coming in and out on Wednesday were impressed, they said they had no idea who it was that had won, and so far, the winner has kept his identity anonymous.
Workers say he did not even react after winning, and they had no idea they had sold the third-biggest CT Lottery prize this year until someone from the lottery called them.
"I'd probably have a heart attack at my age," one regular customer joked. "Even if I hit for 500, I'd jump."
For selling the winning ticket, the store gets a $20,000 bonus check from the lottery, and they hope, also an increase in foot traffic.
"People heard that this store sold the big ticket, everybody want to come there and probably they want to try their luck," said Jarnail Dhaliwal, the owner.
This is not the first time the store has had a big winner. In 2023, it sold a Cash Five ticket worth $100,000, then a $20,000 ticket in November and two $10,000 tickets already this year.
"I see everybody's a winner, I'm a winner, too," said another regular lotto player. "I win one time $5,000 (here), another time $1,000, $800, $2,000, this a lucky place."
A different regular customer named Chris Brown said the news had him "wanting to buy another ticket, so hopefully karma does rub off."
The winner of the $2 million told the lotto that after going through a rough stretch personally, he wants to use the money to start over and buy a house, then travel to South America.
