Hundreds participated in the annual Alpha Community Services YMCA's walk to end homelessness Saturday in Bridgeport.
The event kicked off at Captain's Cove Marina. The goal for the four-mile walk is to raise money and awareness.
Mayor Joe Ganim says homelessness can only be eliminated with help from the entire community.
"I, as mayor, have made it my top priority. This walk, for 24 years, has made a difference in the lives of individuals who have the greatest need," he says.
"It makes us feel, just, I really can't put it into words because it is such an important, important issue that needs to stay in the forefront," says William Acosta, of Bridge House – a nonprofit that provides services, including housing, to adults struggling with mental illnesses.
Organizers say Saturday's turnout was one of the biggest on record.
