The Danbury Police Department have added a unique and sweet vehicle to its fleet.
The department is the first in the state to have a police ice cream truck.
The Copsicle Ice Cream truck will make regular stops at parks, in neighborhoods and at local events handing out free ice cream.
It made its debut Thursday at a summer camp at the Danbury Sports Dome.
All of the goodies inside were completely funded by donations. The cost of the truck was covered by marijuana tax revenue, paid by the dispensaries in the city.
Sgt. Alex Relyea heard about the truck while on vacation and submitted a proposal to the mayor's office.
Relyea says the goal is to build community - one treat at a time.
"Generally, some people go their entire lives without calling the police, but the others that do they're certainly in a time of stress. But this is a way for us to roll out to everyone, regardless of that and provide them with free ice cream. You know, the main point of the donations that we were so excited about is that regardless of someone's financial status they can come get ice cream for free, just like everyone else," he says.
The plan is for the truck to roll out this summer and throughout the year.
