Hundreds of people packed Norwalk City Hall Tuesday night to protest potential budget cuts that could result in the elimination of dozens of teaching jobs.
"Save our staff," Parent David Cahill says. "They’re hurting us where it hurts the most."
The meeting, which was originally scheduled to be in the council chambers, had to be moved to the concert hall auditorium to accommodate the amount of people.
More than 80 Norwalk teachers could soon be out of a job because of the cuts, and nearly 70% of those positions we’re told would be at Norwalk elementary schools.
“Elementary school is really just the legs on which high school and middle school run," said Concord Magnet School student Parker Allen. "Cut the excuses."
Norwalk Public Schools says significant budget constraints have forced substantial staff reductions.
"Can we look for additional funds at the state level?" said Cahill. "Can we look at potentially cutting additional staff members in central office to preserve those school based staff?”
The Board of Education had previously requested $13 million more than the city had approved.
Teachers claim music and arts programs could be affected most by the cuts.
“Them cutting elementary band and strings," CMS band director Guillermo Rojas says, "It's doing nothing but a disservice to this city.
The Board of Education was set to vote on the budget during the meeting late Tuesday night.
