A pair of Bronx residents are in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase across the New York border and into Fairfield County.
Stamford police says 27-year-olds Joner Hernandez and Betsy Bermudez robbed an off-duty police officer in the Bronx and fled to Connecticut.
Police say the BMW they were driving made its way into Stamford after crossing the border into Greenwich.
A Connecticut state police car was destroyed by oncoming traffic at the intersection of Summer and Hoyt streets while attempting to stop the BMW.
“There was a car facing me," Daniel Scherer says, "just completely ripped to shreds."
Officials say the suspects then drove onto the Merritt Parkway going north, but ditched the car and ran away.
With the help of state police and the NYPD, Stamford police K-9 units and drones were able to catch the pair hiding in private yards.
"If there are people just causing tragedies like that, they have to get caught by the law. It’s simple," said Scherer.
The state trooper and drivers of other cars that the trooper collided with were transported to Stamford Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
