The construction of a new sidewalk in Bridgeport Saturday marked the end of a decades long battle to improve accessibility in the city's East End neighborhood, city officials say.

Officials say seniors and people with disabilities had to walk on a rocky path in the middle of the road to get from Bishop Avenue to Connecticut Avenue.

City Council members say the low-lying area is also prone to flooding, which made it hard for pedestrians to get through.

"Our constituents couldn't walk through, it was non-ADA-compliant for our elderly, wheelchairs, scooters and bikes. So here we are today witnessing the sidewalk being finally repaired," said Councilwoman Eneida Martinez.

In order to force construction on the sidewalk, city officials had to cite a property owner in the area.

The project will be completed in two weeks.
