A Waterbury man was fatally struck by a vehicle Saturday while working in a construction zone on I-95 in Greenwich, state police say.
It happened near Exit 3 north around 2:25 a.m.
Police say Osvaldo Vela, of Yonkers, was driving near an active construction zone in the left lane. He then veered into the area and hit Traymont Tucker who was in the center median.
Tucker was pronounced dead a few hours later.
Vela had minor injuries and was taken to Stamford Hospital.
The highway reopened at 10 a.m.
Anyone with information or who witnessed the accident is to contact 203-696-2500.
Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said Tucker was a private construction worker.
"Our hearts go out to the friends, family, and loved ones of Traymont Tucker. Our entire agency grieves with all those impacted by this morning's horrific event. This tragedy underscores how dangerous working on the highway is and how critical it is for everyone to do their part to keep workers safe. It is simply unacceptable that these preventable tragedies keep occurring. We need the public to follow the slow down, move over law; stay alert; and drive sober. These actions save lives," he said.
