Two Ansonia teens are facing charges after police said they intentionally set a fire that destroyed a playground at Gatison Park.
Police and firefighters responded to the park near Third and Fourth streets around 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 3 and found the playground and rubber safety surface completely engulfed in flames. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, and investigators later determined the fire had been intentionally set.
Detectives reviewed surveillance video and conducted additional investigative work that led them to identify two suspects. Search warrants were executed at the suspects' homes on Oct. 5, where police said they recovered evidence supporting their involvement.
Police arrested 19-year-olds Jayvon Johnson and Jose Bordoy on Wednesday. Both were charged with criminal mischief, reckless burning, reckless endangerment and related conspiracy charges.
Johnson posted a $25,000 bond and is due in Derby Superior Court on Oct. 21. Bordoy was held on a $25,000 bond and was presented in court Thursday. The investigation remains ongoing.
